Generative AI and the implications and opportunities it presents for small enterprises in the UK.
Welcome to the first in an irregular series of insights from the team at Bulb Studios, where we dissect emergent technologies and their ramifications and opportunities for micro, small and medium sized businesses in the UK. This time we're talking Generative AI.
November 1, 2023
Today’s focus is on Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), a subfield of AI that holds significant promise for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
This article aims to provide some context on what Generative AI entails, explore its potential applications for SMEs in the UK, and offer key considerations for business teams considering the integration of AI technologies.
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI refers to a class of artificial intelligence algorithms capable of generating content, be it text, images, or even audio, this technology can generate them in a manner akin to human creativity. Far from merely mimicking human behaviour, these algorithms can create content that aligns with specific criteria, functioning as an extension of human capacities. Much like the approach of the Bulb Studios team in designing digital interactions to efficiently match and deliver against user needs, GenAI seeks to offer efficient tailored content across a broad range of contexts.
Generative AI Applications for Small Businesses
Personalisation at Scale
Generative AI permits the rapid creation of tailored customer experiences. For instance, it is entirely feasible to generate a customised email marketing campaign that adapts in real-time to user behaviours, all within a matter of minutes.
AI Content Generation and Marketing
In the realm of digital content creation, Generative AI offers unparalleled advantages, particularly for SMEs that may lack extensive resources. From automated blog posts to strategic social media updates, AI-driven content generation can be an invaluable asset.
For those of us in the digital design and content creation spheres, the potential is endless. From automated blog posts to curated social media updates, Generative AI can be an invaluable asset for businesses that might not have expansive resources but need to operate and flourish in the digital arena.
AI Data Analytics
Data analysis is another area where Generative AI can be particularly beneficial. SMEs often do not have the resources to dedicate to extensive data analytics. In these scenarios, AI can process and offer critical business insights without necessitating a dedicated team or external advisors.
Important Generative AI Considerations for Business Teams
AI Intellectual Property and Ownership
The matter of intellectual property (IP) for AI-generated content remains an evolving landscape. Typically, the rights to content generated by AI software belong to the entity that owns the AI. Consultation with legal professionals is strongly recommended to clarify these complexities when you plan to embark on the utilisation of AI tools.
Differentiation of AI Content
While Generative AI is capable of creating highly competent content, there remains the imperative to differentiate between machine-generated and human-created materials. AI should always be used to supplement the human creativity in order to maintain authenticity, but clearly this will not always be the case and there is much global debate on how this is handled both now and in the future.
AI SEO Considerations
In the context of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), originality remains a high-ranking factor. Therefore, while Generative AI can be employed for initial drafts or brainstorming, human intervention is necessary to ensure the content remains unique and optimised for search engine algorithms.
A Twist in the AI Tale
Now, here comes the kicker… This article was penned, or shall we say generated by ChatGPT (even this bit and what comes next, the whole thing).
Did you spot it? Be honest… Either way it goes to add to the notion that the implications of generative AI are profound, especially for small businesses.
Why It Matters
It’s not just about automation or even efficiency; it’s about scaling capabilities and opening new avenues of creativity and interaction. Just like Create Leicester is the community hub for all things digital design-related in Leicester, Generative AI can be the hub for streamlining various aspects of your small business.
Adopting Generative AI is not about replacing human capabilities but about amplifying them. As with any technological advancement, the key lies in thoughtful implementation, ethical considerations and an ongoing dialogue between human creativity and digital possibilities.
If you’re in digital, aspiring to get into digital, or want to be more involved in the rapidly evolving world of AI, then understanding and harnessing the capabilities of Generative AI is not just an option; it’s a necessity. So, let’s embrace this digital apprentice and explore the new horizons it unveils.

Notes on AI Generation…
Mat here, the real Mat, I’ve let MatGPT have a little rest and thought it might be useful to show my working.
After being intrigued by today’s Bletchley Park AI summit I joined the GenAI: the art of the possible LinkedIn Live event hosted by PwC UK this morning. With that Bletchley backdrop and the Turing Test swirling around in my head, I thought it would be interesting to set myself the challenge of creating this article in 20 minutes to see how useful and possibly more importantly, convincing GenAI can be in a constrained timeframe.
So what did I do?
I set the role for ChatGPT to play: I told ChatGPT who I am and asked it to adopt my persona.
I set the target audience: I told ChatGPT who I would like to talk to – owners, managers and staff of SMEs.
I gave examples: I asked it to analyse and adopt my writing style from a few examples.
I gave some specifics: I told it where I wanted to post the article, what key topics to cover and to reveal that this blog post was written by Chat GPT at the end.
I added detail about the tone: I asked it to make the tone of the article authoritative but conversational and friendly and to write it in British English.
I proofread the piece. The final job was to proofread the content before publishing – ensuring grammar was used how I’d use it.
And that was it…
In practice, ChatGPT gets us about 70% of the way there in my experience.
Proofreading is essential and regenerations and edits will be numerous and involve a keen eye. We’d also need to carefully consider Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which is currently still a hybrid of human analytical effort and AI generation, but given the constraints of the exercise, I left it as-is with a couple of grammar tweaks.
So how did I do?
Well firstly I overshot my 20 minute deadline by about 12 minutes but I’ll live with that as it was entirely down to me following the steps above to ensure the prompt was sufficient to generate something convincing.
However, now ChatGPT has learned my persona and preferences, I effectively have an ‘app’ which can research and generate a starting point in seconds from a brief that will take me less than ten minutes to write in the future.
The copy itself was generated in under minute by Chat GPT.
I’ll leave those facts with you in deciding how successful this little exercise has been. Just to reassure you though, this is one-off and whilst ChatGPT is now a powerful tool in our arsenal as digital agency, MatGPT has been put to bed.
